No. 2 - Song - Winifred and Chorus

MIDI File

Winifred: Marjorie worked on a country farm,
She rose at six, fed the chicks,
Milked the cows, and upon her arm
A basket of eggs she carried.
She fed the pigs, and made the hay,
Tended the bees, made butter and cheese,
And at the close of ev'ry day,
At a certain spot she tarried!
Marjorie sat by the country stile,
Chorus: The country stile,
Winifred: The country stile;
Passers-by who caught her eye
Were met with a saucy smile.
Chorus: A smile,
Winifred: And men who happen'd to pass that way,
Though far too busy to waste the day,
Took a terrible time, so people say,
To get over the country stile!
Chorus: Marjorie sat by the country stile,
Winifred: The country stile,
Chorus: The country stile,
Passers-by who caught her eye
Were met with a saucy smile.
Winifred: A smile,
Chorus: And men who happen'd to pass that way,
Though far too busy to waste the day,
Took a terrible time, so people say,
To get over the country stile!

Winifred: Marjorie alter'd as time went by,
Began to shirk half her work,
Seemed to have other fish to fry,
And with cheap novelettes she dallied.
The very moment her work was o'er,
Neatly dress'd in her Sunday best,
Out and away from the farm-house door
And off to the stile she sallied.
Marjorie stood on the country stile,
Chorus: The country stile,
Winifred: The country stile;
Shapely feet and ankles neat
She coyly displayed the while,
Chorus: The while,
Winifred: And if it happen'd the wind was high,
Expensive lingerie caught the eye,
And gossips hinted that that was why
She stood on the country stile!
Chorus: Marjorie stood on the country stile,
Winifred: The country stile,
Chorus: The country stile,
Shapely feet and ankles neat
She coyly displayed the while,
Winifred: The while,
Chorus: And if it happen'd the wind was high,
Expensive lingerie caught the eye,
And gossips hinted that that was why
She stood on the country stile!

Winifred: As Marjorie stood in her graceful pose,
A youth from town, just come down,
Caught a glimpse of her dainty hose,
And a hint of her understanding.
He didn't waste much time, not he,
Ere set of sun he'd woo'd and won,
For down he sank on his bended knee
Her heart and her hand demanding.
Marjorie married in country style,
Chorus: In country style,
Winifred: In country style,
The country-side to cheer the bride
Were gather'd for many a mile,
Chorus: A mile,
Winifred: And now whenever you pass that way,
Whatever the hour of night or day,
All the unmarried girls in the village they say
Are found by the country stile!
Chorus: Marjorie married in country style,
Winifred: In country style,
Chorus: In country style,
The country-side to cheer the bride
Were gather'd for many a mile,
Winifred: A mile,
Chorus: And now whenever you pass that way,
Whatever the hour of night or day,
All the unmarried girls in the village they say
Are found by the country stile!
