No. 10 - Song - Elphin and Chorus

MIDI File

Elphin: When a maiden leaves school, as a rule,
And returns to her friends and relations,
In the style of her dress, more or less,
They'll begin to make some alterations,
For she's growing quite old, so she's told,
Though she somehow is able to bear up,
She must wear a long skirt, they assert,
And of course she'll start putting her hair up.
There are lots of things that they won't allow,
At bad behaviour they're apt to frown,
For she's really getting a big girl now,
So her hair goes up and her dress goes down.
Chorus: There are lots of things that they won't allow,
At bad behaviour they're apt to frown,
For she's really getting a big girl now,
So her hair goes up and her dress goes down.
Elphin: By and bye she will go, don't you know,
To the very first ball she has been to,
And there is such a lot to be got,
If her costume is carefully seen to,
For her gloves and her shoes she must choose,
And the ball dress is something quite splendid,
If her mother admits that it fits,
Well, she feels that her troubles are ended.
Then the band strikes up and her joys commence,
Her programme fills very soon, no doubt,
But it puts her parents to some expense,
For the bill comes in when the girl comes out.
Chorus: Then the band strikes up and her joys commence,
Her programme fills very soon, no doubt,
But it puts her parents to some expense,
For the bill comes in when the girl comes out.

Elphin: Now she may be the belle, who can tell?
And the regular rage of the season,
Men will go on their knees, if you please,
And propose for a very slight reason,
But alas! if she's plain she'll remain
On the shelf, which is not very funny
When the family schemes, so it seems,
For a marriage with plenty of money.
So she lingers on, and perhaps she'll find
Her friends are rather inclined to scoff,
And one's parents often are most unkind,
For they do go on if you don't go off!
Chorus: So she lingers on, and perhaps she'll find
Her friends are rather inclined to scoff,
And one's parents often are most unkind,
For they do go on if you don't go off!
