No. 23 - Song - Schnapps and Chorus

MIDI File

Schnapps: An Englishman, some years ago,
Had a scheme that dumb-founded the earth;
He decided that he would embark on the sea,
And for once leave the land of his birth.
The Continent, so he had heard,
Dissipation and wickedness meant,
But never a word against Holland he'd heard,
So he asked his mamma — and he went.
He bought a cheap ticket at Harwich,
For at Holland he wanted to look;
P'r'aps the Great Eastern line
Will invite out to dine
This brave man who went first to the Hook.
Chorus: He bought a cheap ticket at Harwich,
For at Holland he wanted to look;
P'r'aps the Great Eastern line
Will invite out to dine
This brave man who went first to the Hook.

Schnapps: We live in a terrible whirl,
We can't seem to move fast enough;
And soon we shall be saved from crossing the sea,
Whenever the water is rough.
For what with new Tunnels and Tubes,
We'll never see sunshine or showers,
We shall travel in shoals, like rabbits or moles,
Thro' this mad Aero-planet of ours.
You will take a Tube ticket at Harwich,
Round the word for sixpence you can book;
There are only three stops,
Close to all the best shops,
The North Pole, Shepherd's Bush and the Hook.
Chorus: We shall take a Tube ticket at Harwich,
Round the word for sixpence you can book;
There are only three stops,
Close to all the best shops,
The North Pole, Shepherd's Bush and the Hook.

Schnapps: Some ungracious critics abroad
On London are awfully rough;
At her streets some young Blood
Proudly loves to throw mud,
Just as if they had not got enough.
But improvements have lately occurred,
War Offices spring up each day;
Not to speak of the bricks
For new theatres for Hicks,
And a hundred hotels that can't pay.
So why take a ticket at Harwich?
On your beautiful London you'll look,
When the Strand and the Mall
Shall be one grand Canal,
Then the Vanguards can go to the Hook.
Chorus: So why take a ticket at Harwich?
On your beautiful London you'll look,
When the Strand and the Mall
Shall be one grand Canal,
Then the Vanguards can go to the Hook.

Schnapps: La Milo has conquered and gone;
And now this young lady has fled,
The Zancigs we hail, who both take in the "Mail,"
And I fancy they've "taken in" Stead.
They are truly a wonderful pair
Whose feats are both startling and new,
And they've proved to the West
"Second thoughts" are the best
For themselves and for Mister Moul, too!
While Agnes is shopping at Harwich,
On the bright side of things she will look,
For she knows very well
She can instantly tell
With whom Julius has dined at the Hook!
Chorus: While Agnes is shopping at Harwich,
On the bright side of things she will look,
For she knows very well
She can instantly tell
With whom Julius has dined at the Hook!
