No. 21 - Duet - Tippin and Genie - "The Smart Set."
Lyrics by George Grossmith, Junr.

MIDI File

Genie: There's a set that you've lately been told to avoid,
It will drag you to shame and despair;
It is dreadfully smart
And it favours that part
Of the town known as Grosvenor Square.
Tippin: If you're honest and poor they get very annoyed,
And you'll know it the moment you've met.
Genie: So unless you're an Earl
Or his favourite girl,
Both: Beware of this frivolous set.
Oh! brothers beware,
Stick to the simple life,
And if married you be,
Hurry straight home to tea
With your lawful wife and the children.
Oh! brothers take care,
Don't gamble and smoke and bet,
For these are a few of the things that they do
In the fast smart set.

Genie: No tears or entreaties have any effect
On these blue-blooded social misfits,
Tippin: If Bridge they should play,
When the time comes to pay,
They'll be tossing you double or quits.
Genie: And their children, it's shameful the way they neglect,
When on errands of pleasure they roam,
Now you can't say it's right
Tippin: To go out late at night,
And leave the poor baby at home.
Both: Oh! brothers beware,
Stick to the simple life,
Play patience or nap,
In the middle-class lap
Of your lawful wife and the children.
Don't try and play Bridge
Or you'll learn to your deep regret,
Tippin: That the mothers all smoke,
Genie: While their daughters revoke
Both: In the fast smart set.

Genie: There are doings you tell of in whispering breath.
Tippin: It's only discretion that stops yer
From telling your friends
Of the saucy weekends,
Genie: At house-parties in Derby or Shropshire.
They get up theatricals,
Tippin: Fast plays like Macbeth,
Genie: With some skirt dancing just to relieve all.
Tippin: Then the Duchess recites
Genie: And the Duke puts on — things
Of a pattern that's quite mediæval.
Both: Oh! brothers beware,
Stick to the simple life,
Supposing some day
You should go to the play
With your lawful wife and the children.
Don't sit in the stalls,
It's there that they may be met,
Take a seat in the bar
If you wish to be far
From the fast smart set.
