A Review of Rug Opera's Carry On Sorcerer

by Peter Zavon

Sunday's events began on a high note with a performance of "Carry On Sorcerer" in the Paxton Suite by Rug Opera. Rug Opera was formed in 1995 and plays a variety of small venues as attractions at charity fund raisers. Their productions are intended to be presented within the confines of a rug. The more prosperous the group becomes - the larger the rug!

In this case, the program described the work as "Adapted from Gilbert and Sullivan," yet the vast majority of the original work was there. A few bits and pieces of music were cut, and some of Gilbert's words were modified/modernized. Yet in many ways this was more faithful to the original than many a production which would never think of using the phrases "Adapted from..." or "Based on..."

The performance was in modern dress and was set in the small Essex villageof Pluckett Green, a few miles from the A12 highway. Alexis Pointdexter has made good in the city, according to the program, and has decided to wed his childhood sweetheart, The Honorable Aline Sangazure. The inhabitants of the hamlet have come together to witness the betrothal. Alexis has seen an ad in the Sunday Sport for a new drug, one he believes will unite the entire population, but something "goes slightly wrong..." says the program.

All members of the cast played fully drawn characters. There was, for example, Crichton the Buttler, Constable Painting, Nurse B. Sindemanners, Constance Tartlett [sic] and her mother Nora, Dr. Deliverance Daily, Aline Sangazure and her mother, Lady Sangazure DBE, and so forth.

The musical presentation was of the highest standard. The modernization was only in dress and some spoken bits. For example, Constance was dressed in a manner befitting her surname and the bells ringing forth at the opening were the bleeps of cell phones, with which every character was equipped. Among the bad habits that J.W. Wells confesses to Lady Sangazure are that he "eats caviar with a knife," "often rides a commuter train," and "vacations in Spain." He also confesses that he is engaged to a girl who has a "smile sweet and bright" and lives on the Isle of Wight."
