Introduction

Gilbert was a regular contributor to the periodical Fun from 1861 to 1871. His contributions were anonymous, but the proprietor’s marked copies (which begin in May 1865) indicate which items are by Gilbert. John Bush Jones covers this in his article “W.S. Gilbert’s Contributions to Fun,” Bulletin of the New York Public Library 73 (Apr. 1969) pp. 253-266. The proprietor’s copies lack a few issues (20 May 1865, 16 December 1865, and several for 1870), so the attributions for these dates are tentative.

These pages lists Gilbert’s contributions to Fun from May 1865, with links to the pages in the University of Florida Digital Collections where available. Where pages are missing or poorly scanned on the Florida site we have substituted links to Google Books where possible.

We hope eventually to provide a similar list for Gilbert’s (probable) contributions from 1861 to May 1865. Andrew Crowther has covered this topic in two articles for the W.S. Gilbert Society Journal, issue 25 (Winter 2008) and issue 31 (Autumn 2012).

For people with specific interests (Gilbert’s verse, illustrations, etc.), we’ve indicated the type of each contribution (verse, ill(ustrated) verse, prose etc.), adapting the descriptions from Jones’s article.
