Gilbert's Letter to The Times of 4 July 1879
Issue 29611, pg. 10 col F

Lord Mayor's Day

Sir,--I see that the authorship of Lord Mayor's Day (an adaptation of La Cagnotte) at the Folly Theatre is generally ascribed to me. It is true that some months since I commenced a rough translation of La Cagnotte for Madame Dolaro; but circumstances over which I had no control prevented my completing it and the play was given to another author to adapt to the English stage. That gentleman had full licence from me to use the notes that I had made for my guidance; but, as I have neither seen the play nor attended any of the rehearsals, I am not in a position to say whether he has or has not availed himself of that permission.

I am, Sir, your obedient servant,

London, July 4.

W.S. GILBERT
