Gilbert's Letter to The Times of 22 January 1907
Issue 38236, pg. 11 col A

"The Gondoliers"

Sir,--It is the practice of the Savoy management to announce that the operas with which I am associated are produced "under the personal direction of the author." As this expression is usually held to comprehend a much wider range of duties than those which, under existing circumstances, fall to my share, I shall feel obliged if you will allow me to explain that in the present series of revivals my responsibility is confined exclusively to the ordinary duties of a stage manager.

Your obedient servant,

January 20.
W.S. GILBERT
