GILBERTIAN GOSSIP

No 41 -- Spring 1993     Edited by Michael Walters

BITS AND PIECES

Wednesday 13 May 1992: "Sullivan and Gilbert, presented by Barry Jones. Sir Arthur Sullivan was born in Lambeth on 13 May 1842, so today we celebrate the exact 150th anniversary of his birth. To mark the occasion Barry Jones reviews the achievement of Sullivan without Gilbert (the songs, the incidental music, opera and choral works), the composer's comic operetta laisons with other librettists, as well as his role in the famous Savoy operas. So there will be lots of sparkling G&S as well as S. by himself".

The above appeared in the Spring 1992 leaflet for Havering Central Library, which someone must have handed me. I did not hear the programme, and wonder if any reader did?

ADRIAN LAWSON was in THE HAPPY PRINCE by Sue Casson, based on the story by Oscar Wilde, at the Fringe on the Green, Buxton, from Monday 20 April to 4 May 1992.

A year or so ago, the D'Oyly Carte PINAFORE film was shown on Irish Television, and David Skelly kindly sent me the clipping from RTE Times, announcing the event as follows:

8.00 News Headlines and Weatherline, followed by HMS Pinafore, by Henry Sullivan and William E. Gilbert.

Josephine Corcoran ........ Pamela Field
Ralp Rackshaw ............. Malcolm Williams
