1 O Jesu, Thou art standing   2 O Jesu, Thou art knocking;
    Outside the fast-closed door,       And lo! that hand is scarr’d,
  In lowly patience waiting     And thorns Thy brow encircle,
    To pass the threshold o’er:       And tears Thy face have marr’d:
  Shame on us, Christian brethren,     O love that passeth knowledge
    Whose name and sign we bear,       So patiently to wait!
  O shame, thrice shame upon us     O sin that hath no equal
    To keep Him standing there!       So fast to bar the gate!

3 O Jesu, Thou art pleading
    In accents meek and low,
  “I died for you, My children,
    And will ye treat me so?”
  O Lord, with shame and sorrow
    We open now the door;
  Dear Saviour, enter, enter,
    And leave us never more. Amen.

William Walsham How, 1823 - 97.
