No. 31: SOLOS (Tenor & Bass) and CHORUS

"Is Not This He"

MIDI Symbol

Chorus.
Is this not he whom they seek to kill,
    and lo! he speaketh boldly,
and they say nothing unto him,
and they say nothing unto him?
Do the rulers know that this is the very Christ?

A Ruler. (Tenor)
We know this man, whence he is,
But when Christ cometh no man knoweth whence he is.

Chorus.
  When Christ cometh
will he do more miracles than this man hath done?
  This is the Christ.

A Ruler.
Shall Christ come out of Galilee?
Christ cometh of the seed of David,
and out of the town of Bethlehem
where David was.

Chorus.
Never man spake as this man.

A Ruler.
  Are you also deceived?
Have any rulers or the Pharisees believed him?
This people who knoweth not the law is cursed.

Nicodemus. (Bass)
Doth our law judge any man before it hear him
    and know what he doeth?
Refrain from this man and let him alone,
for if this counsel or work be of men
it shall come to naught,
but if it be of God ye cannot overthrow it,
lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

A Ruler.
  Art thou also of Galilee!
Search and look,
for out of Galilee ariseth no Prophet.
