THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Sydney Allen (1951-53)

[Born c.1913, died 14 Nov. 1990]

Sydney Allen joined the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in September 1951, immediately assuming the roles of the Usher in Trial by Jury, Bob Beckett in H.M.S. Pinafore, Go-To in The Mikado (with occasional substitutions in the title role), Old Adam Goodheart in Ruddigore, and Giorgio in The Gondoliers.

He also filled in on occasion that season for Darrell Fancourt as Sergeant Meryll in The Yeomen of the Guard. In the 1952-53, Allen continued as the Usher, Bob Beckett, Go-To, and Old Adam, while Giorgio was assumed by Trevor Hills. At the start of the next season in September 1953, Allen yielded all but Old Adam. He left the Company in November.
