Evelyn Astle (1922-27)

[Born Melbourne, Derbyshire 18 Apr 1900, died Melbourne, Derbyshire 16 Jan 1961]

Evelyn Astle served in D’Oyly Carte’s "New" Opera Company in September 1922 through June 1927. She assumed her first named part, Celia in Iolanthe, in 1925 when Marjorie Eyre moved up to play Phyllis. She also filled in on occasion in the 1925-26 season as Zorah in Ruddigore. In the 1926-27 season, her last with the Company, she held down two small roles: Zorah in Ruddigore, and Fiametta in The Gondoliers. Miss Astle also filled in as Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance for at least one performance in December 1926.

She continued her singing, primarily as a concert artist, but also in amateur Gilbert & Sullivan, into the 1940s, retiring after the war.
