Frederick Bovill as Pish-Tush in The Mikado

Frederick Bovill (1885-87)

Surprising little is known about Frederick Bovill who created the role of Pish-Tush in The Mikado at the Savoy and played it throughout its run, March 1885 to January 1887. Carte engaged him again in 1891 for the Royal English Opera House to play the Squire in the first production of Ivanhoe (January to July 1891), and later as the Chancellor in La Basoche (November 1891 to January 1892). Apart from a single matinee performance in A Hundred Years Ago, a pastoral operetta at the Royalty in July 1892, these were his only theatrical appearances on the London Stage.
