Madge Christo (1886-90)

[Born Hirwaun, Glamorgan, Wales 1860, died Camden, London Mar 1907]

Contralto Margaret Christo was born Margaret Hardman. She joined the D'Oyly Carte chorus at the Savoy at some point during the first run of The Mikado. She would understudy Rosina Brandram in the principal contralto parts from January 1887 to February 1890, filling in for Miss Brandram from time to time as Dame Hannah in Ruddigore (September 1887), Katisha in The Mikado (August 1888), and Dame Carruthers in The Yeomen of the Guard (October 1888 and April 1889). Miss Christo also appeared as Mrs. Harrington Jarramie in the Savoy curtain raiser Mrs. Jarramie's Genie (1887-89).

From February to May 1890 Miss Christo toured with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "E" as the Duchess of Plaza-Toro in The Gondoliers. She then left the Carte organization but continued to tour in musical theatre until 1895.
