Malcolm Coy was taught as a dancer before training in singing in his hometown of Doncaster and later in London. He was a member of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus from September 1972 until April 1979.During his first four years with the Company he made occasional appearances as First Citizen and Second Citizen in The Yeomen of the Guard, and as Mr. Bunthorne's Solicitor in Patience.

From September 1976 until he left, Coy was the regular First Citizen, continuing to fill in as the Solicitor from time to time.During his final year with the Company he substituted for Geoffrey Shovelton on occasion as Luiz in The Gondoliers.Coy may be heard, however briefly, as First Citizen on D'Oyly Carte's 1979 recording of The Yeomen of the Guard.
