Clifford Downey (1960-62)

After completing his studies at the Dublin College of Music, Clifford Kennedy Downey spent the two seasons spanning September 1960 and June 1962 as a tenor chorister and understudy with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company.During both seasons he also appeared in the small part of First Yeoman in The Yeomen of the Guard.

Downey moved to Cape Town, South Africa, in 1963, and in 1965 took his first role with the Cape Town Gilbert & Sullivan Society:Nanki-Poo in The Mikado. Downey eventually gave up tenor leads to concentrate on the comic baritone or "patter" roles. In all he appeared in 29 Cape Town G & S Society productions between 1965 and 1991. He also sang for the Cape Performing Arts Board, Faircape Players, Festival Players, Milnerton Players, and the Eoan Group.
