THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Albert Dudley (1919-25, 1942-47)

[Born Kensington, London 6 Jul 1880, died Brighton 8 Feb 1971]

Albert Dudley was the professional name of Thomas Albert Bacon. During a lengthy career on the musical comedy and concert stages and as a singing coach, he had two stretches with the D'Oyly Carte organization as a bass-baritone chorister. From September 1919 to June 1925 Dudley toured with the D'Oyly Carte "New" Opera Company, appearing on occasion during the 1922-23 season as Go-To in The Mikado and taking the part of Old Adam Goodheart in Ruddigore from November 1924 to February 1925. After a gap of 17 years he returned to the chorus of the remaining D'Oyly Carte Opera Company as a wartime replacement in May 1942, remaining with the Company until August 1947.

Dudley made two appearances in London programs in 1913: as a peasant in the Irish comedy General John Regan (Apollo, January-October), and as Paillasson in musical play The Girl in the Taxi (Lyric, November-December); and one in 1934: as an extra in Noel Coward's Conversation Piece (His Majesty's, February-July), a work in which he also played in New York.
