THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Henry Dunman (1880, 1882-83)

[Born Singapore 7 Jun 1853, died Buffalo, New York 5 Feb 1939]

Henry Dunman was reportedly a member of the D'Oyly Carte cast of The Pirates of Penzance when it was performed for the first time in America in 1880. He was in all likelihood a chorister for no record of his appearing in a named part has come to light. Nor have any details emerged as to which of Carte's four American Pirates companies he may have belonged to.

He was engaged again by D'Oyly Carte for the first New York production of Iolanthe which opened at the Standard Theatre in November 1882. By the week ending February 17, 1883, Dunman had been elevated to the principal tenor role of Earl Tolloller.
