THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Rose Estelle in Iolanthe

Rose Estelle (1883-96)

[Born Regents Park, London 2 Oct 1860, died Santa Cruz, California 17 Dec 1959]

Rose Estelle was born Constance Charlotte Victoria Von Holtrop. She joined Mr. D'Oyly Carte's No. 1 "Iolanthe" Company chorus in 1883 and in July of that year filled in briefly for Laura Clement as Phyllis in the fairy opera. It was her only recorded named part with the Company.

In February 1884 she married fellow chorister P. J. Holden. Holden would later graduate to principal roles and adopt the stage name J. Brandon Phillips. Rose would appear as a chorister with the Carte organization on and off for the next dozen years. Although most details are lacking, we are able to place her with Carte's Company "B" in July 1894. The Holden's had three children during those dozen years so it's likely she spent a few stretches away from the stage.
