THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Arthur W. Fowles (1892, 1893-94)

Arthur W. Fowles was a chorister with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "D" on tour from March to May 1892, and with the main London company at the Savoy from September 1892 into 1894. In between the D'Oyly Carte engagements he was a chorister at the Criterion Theatre, London, in W. S. Gilbert and George Grossmith's Haste to the Wedding.

While on tour with Company "D" Fowles appeared as Samuel Chunk in the one-act companion piece Captain Billy (and possibly as John Dory in The Vicar of Bray). At the Savoy he was Nicodemus Knock-knee in Haddon Hall. He also filled in there on occasion for Richard Green as Sir George Vernon (January and March 1893). Fowles later deputized as Captain Corcoran in Utopia, Limited in January 1894.

His only other London role was Inspector Morrison in a single matinee performance of Rutland Barrington's comedy Bartonmere Towers at the Savoy on February 1, 1893.
