Dorothy Gates (1923-26, 1926-28, 1929-30, 1930, 1940)

Soprano Dorothy Gates joined the D'Oyly Carte Repertory Company chorus in March 1923. During her first tour with the Company, which extended until January 1926, she appeared in the small parts of Fleta in Iolanthe (July 1923-January 1926), Sacharissa in Princess Ida (August 1924-June 1925), and Vittoria in The Gondoliers (on occasion during 1924-25 season). She returned to the chorus again in August 1926, taking as share of Fleta again in the 1927-28 season. She left the Company again in June 1928.

Miss Gates returned to the chorus again for the September 1929-March 1930 season at the Savoy. She rejoined for six weeks at Golders Green and Streatham Hill in September-November 1930, and returned for six more weeks in the same theatres in February and March 1940. She was married to D'Oyly Carte principal baritone Leo Sheffield.
