THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Walter Gilbert as Nanki-Poo in The Mikado

Walter Gilbert (1885-87)

[Born Tunstall, Staffordshire 1855, died Pitfold, Scotland 6 Aug 1931]

Tenor Walter Gilbert was a member of the chorus at the Savoy when The Mikado premiered in March 1885. In December he went on tour as Nanki-Poo in the first provincial production of The Mikado with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "E" Company from November 1885 to December 1887.

Upon leaving the D'Oyly Carte, Walter Gilbert would sing principal tenor roles on tour throughout the 1890s. He also toured his own companies before going into theatre management. The image of Gilbert to the right comes from a programme for the D'Oyly Carte's December 1930 visit to the Theatre Royal, Aberdeen, where he was the lessee and licensee of the theatre.
