THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Joan Gwynne (1952-54)
[Born Astwood Bank, Worcs. 1933, died Cliftonville, Kent 1994 or 1995]
Joan Gwynne (real name Crook) came from a musical background, appearing on stage first with the Astwood Bank Dramatic Society, directed by her mother, Bessie Crook. She adopted the stage name Joan Gywnne when she joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus in August 1952 as a mezzo-soprano chorister, and served with the D'Oyly Carte until May 1954, when she left to get married.
While raising a family she taught music and art in Maidstone High School and other schools. She later moved to Kent where she taught younger students in primary schools.
