THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Avon Hastings (1894-98)

[Born Carnarvon, Wales c.1869]

Avon Hastings (likely a stage name) appeared as Sir Bailey-Barre in Utopia Limited on tour with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "A" from October to December 1894. Earlier that year, he had been a chorister in Utopia on Carte's American tour of the opera (March to June in New York and Boston).

Sir Bailey-Barre would be his only role with the D'Oyly Carte organization. He later served in the chorus with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "E" in 1896, then transferred to the Savoy where he was in the chorus for the first revival of The Yeomen of the Guard (May-November 1897), the newly-reworked Grand Duchess of Gerolstein (December 1897-March 1898), and the original production of The Beauty Stone (May-July 1898).

While at the Savoy, Hastings appeared as an extra in two benefit matinee productions of Trial by Jury -at the Lyceum, December 1896, and at Drury Lane, March 1898.
