Contralto Elizabeth Howarth served in the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus from March 1952 to July 1958. During her tenure she appeared regularly in several small roles:First Bridesmaid in Trial by Jury (1956-58), Kate in The Pirates of Penzance (1952-53 and 1956-58), Lady Saphir in Patience (1952-58), Leila in Iolanthe (1952-53 and, as a substitute, 1954-55), Sacharissa in Princess Ida (1955-56), and Inez (1952-53, 1954-55, and 1956-57) and Vittoria (1957-58) in The Gondoliers. She also filled in briefly in October 1952 for Ann Drummond-Grant as the Duchess of Plaza-Toro in The Gondoliers.

Miss Howarth married D'Oyly Carte principal tenor Neville Griffiths in June 1953. The Griffiths left the Company together in July 1958. She later appeared in Gilbert & Sullivan with Sadler's Wells Opera (Mikado, 1962, and Patience, 1969) and with English National Opera in London and on tour (Patience, 1984).
