THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Marguerite Hylder as Inez in The Gondoliers

Marguerite Hylder (1928-32)

[Born c.1899]

Contralto Marguerite Hylder joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus in July 1928. In July 1929 she took the small part of Inez in The Gondoliers, a role she would retain until she left the Company in June 1932. She did fill in as Katisha in The Mikado on occasion during the 1930-31 season, most likely replacing Gwladys Gowrie, following the tragic death of Bertha Lewis.

Little is known of her career beyond the D'Oyly Carte. Some 15 years after leaving the Company, Marguerite Hylder appeared in London as the Hon. Mrs. Tudor in Eden Phillpotts' "Devonshire comedy" The Farmer's Wife (Apollo, September 1947).
