THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Madge Inglis (1883-85)

[Born Liverpool 19 Aug 1846, died Kensington Nov 1898]

Contralto Margaret Orpah English took the stage name Madge Inglis when she joined the D'Oyly Carte and sang as the Lady Jane on tour with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's No. 2 "Patience" Company from January 1883 until June 1884 when the Company was disbanded. In September of that year she took over as Lady Blanche with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "A" ("Princess Ida" No. 2) Company. That Company added The Sorcerer to its tour in January 1885, with Miss Inglis as Mrs. Partlett. When Kate Forster left in March, Miss Inglis moved up to Lady Sangazure in the latter work, and when H.M.S. Pinafore joined the tour in June she added Little Buttercup to her repertoire. She left the D'Oyly Carte when "A" Company was disbanded in December 1885.

Subsequent roles included the part of Judith Bassett in Walter Parke and J. C. Bond Andrews' comic opera Herne's Oak, produced at the Prince of Wales's Theatre, Liverpool, in 1887.
