Edwin Isham as Guntran of Beaugrant in The Beauty Stone

Edwin Isham (1898)

[Born Dunkirk, New York 1 January 1867, died Brielle, New Jersey 6 Oct 1937]

American baritone Edwin Schutt Isham created the small part of Guntran of Beaugrant in The Beauty Stone at the Savoy (May-July 1898).It was his only engagement with the D'Oyly Carte organization, and his only role on the London Stage.

Earlier Isham had appeared at New York's Casino Theatre as Ptarmigan, Cleopatra's music teacher, in the Harry B. Smith & Victor Herbert comic opera The Wizard of the Nile (November 1895-February 1896).

More a vocalist than an actor, Isham returned to America in 1899 along with tenor George Devoll (Philip, Lord of Mirlemont in The Beauty Stone). The two would spend their remaining years together, for a time providing musicales to tea parties, women's clubs, and the like, including one such occasion in 1903 at the White House for a party hosted by Mrs. Edith Roosevelt.
