THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Gertrude Jerrard (1898-1900)

[Born Lambeth 1873, died Hastings 9 Mar 1952]

Soprano Emily Gertrude Jerrard was a chorister with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company at the Savoy beginning at least with the first production of The Beauty Stone (May-July 1898). It seems likely that she remained through the July 1898 revival of The Gondoliers, the September 1898 revival of The Sorcerer, and the initial production of The Lucky Star in 1899.

During the last month of the June-November 1899 revival of H.M.S. Pinafore and Trial by Jury, Miss Jerrard was a short-term replacement for Isabel Jay as the Plaintiff in Trial. Then, when The Rose of Persia received its premiere at the Savoy on November 29, 1899, she created the small part of "Whisper-of-the-West-Wind." She gave a trial show as the Sultana in December 1899, then resumed her smaller role until March 1900, when she took over from Jessie Rose as "Scent-of-Lilies."Miss Jerrard joined Carte's newly-formed Company "D" the following month, touring as "Scent-of-Lilies" until December 1900.
