Esme Major joined the D'Oyly Carte Repertory Opera Company as a soprano chorister in September 1918, and served until November 1919. After a year away, she joined the D'Oyly Carte "New" Opera Company in December 1921, before leaving again in June 1922.

During her absence from the D'Oyly Carte, Miss Tomlin traveled, with her husband, to South Africa with a "Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company," appearing in a repertoire of seven Gilbert & Sullivan operas. The Company opened in Johannesburg in June 1920. A chorister and small part player, her roles on the tour included Celia in Iolanthe.
