THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Annie May (1881-84, 1895, 1902-03)

[Born London c.1857]

Touring chorister Annie (or Annette) May's D'Oyly Carte career was closely linked to that of principal baritone and stage manager Albert James. Over the years Miss May appeared in the chorus with a number of D'Oyly Carte Opera touring companies during James's tenure. We know with some degree of certainty that she sang with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "C" Company in 1881, "Patience" No. 2 in 1883, "Iolanthe" No. 2 in 1884, D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "B" in 1895, and the company that toured South Africa from April 1902 to May 1903. Her only known named part was Mrs. Bowcher in the companion piece Mock Turtles in 1883.
