THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

(Master) Albert Pickering (1880)

The part of Hercules, the page, was never in the D'Oyly Carte program at the Opera Comique or Savoy, but it was occasionally on tour. Albert Pickering, Hercules for Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "D" Company, March-December 1880, was almost certainly a juvenile supernumerary, though the part was occasionally filled by a chorister. He shares his surname with Edward A. Pickering, a juvenile who appeared as Hercules, and Tom Tucker in H.M.S. Pinafore, on tour in 1878, and who later played Sir Joseph Porter in a children's H.M.S. Pinafore at the Opera Comique and on tour. (The programs for H.M.S. Pinafore on the 1880 "D" Company tour use the pseudonym Mr. Fitzaltamont for Tom Tucker.) Whether Albert was Edward's brother, or Edward himself using his middle name, is unknown. If the latter, he would have had to have been away from a portion of the children's Pinafore tour.
