THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Ethel Quarry (1900-03)

[Born St. Pancras, London c.1879]

Ethel Florence Quarry was a chorister with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company at the Savoy and on tour between November 1900, for the first London revival of Patience, and the autumn of 1903, for the tour of A Princess of Kensington that followed the Savoy production of that opera. She appeared on occasion as Kate in Merrie England at the Savoy (1902-03) and played Lady Jellicoe when A Princess of Kensington went on tour in July 1903.

Miss Quarry married former D'Oyly Carte baritone Powis Pinder in 1908. She later appeared as Kate on a 1909 William Greet tour of Merrie England, featuring Walter Passmore. Her last London role appears to have been Zivola Zambrene in the pantomime Little Boy Bluebeard (Court, 1910-11). Her older sister Edith Quarry appeared on tour with the D'Oyly Carte organization between 1894 and 1898.
