THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Ella Quartly as Vittoria in The Gondoliers

Ella Quartly (1915-19)

[Born 1 Jan 1895]

After completing her training at the Guildhall School of Music, Ella Quartly joined the D'Oyly Carte Repertory Opera Company chorus in November 1915. Beginning in the July 1917-June 1918 season she appeared regularly as Leila in Iolanthe (shared with Ivy Page), Chloe in Princess Ida, and Vittoria in The Gondoliers. During the following season she also appeared as Peep-Bo in The Mikado, but she left the Company in February 1919 to get married.

Upon leaving she was given an album of autographs and photos by her fellow performers. The album, and her recollections 63 years later, are the basis for a nostalgic article "Ella Quartly's Album, 1919" by BJ (Brian Jones) in the March 1982 issue of The Savoyard.
