Comedian J. B. Rae appeared at the Gaiety under John Hollingshead in 1869-70. He was the Burgomaster in the original cast of Genevieve de Brabant, an adaptation of an Offenbach opera bouffe, produced at the Philharmonic in November 1871. It was a role he would play again and again throughout the 1870s on tour with Emily Soldene.

Rae toured with the D'Oyly Carte organization from August 1881 to April 1882, appearing as Major Murgatroyd in Patience (with "D" Company), August-December 1881, and (with the No. 1 "Patience" Company), March-April 1882, and as Martin MacGruder (with another Carte touring company) in Claude Duval, January-March 1882.
