THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Charles Ramsay (1879-92)

[Born Southwark 1843, died 1908]

William Charles Ramsay assumed the bass part of Bob Beckett in H.M.S. Pinafore with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's Opera Company at the Opera Comique in August 1879 following the departure of Mr. Dymott, the only principal to elope with the Comedy Opera Company directors for the rival production of Pinafore at the Imperial. It was Ramsay's only named role with the Company. Ramsey appears to have remained in the D'Oyly Carte chorus at the Opera Comique and Savoy for most, if not all, of the next thirteen years:through at least January 1892 and the original production of The Nautch Girl.
