THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Hooper Russell (1925-27)

Baritone Sydney Hooper Russell joined the D'Oyly Carte Repertory Opera Company chorus in February 1925. He transferred to the D'Oyly Carte "New" Opera Company in July of that year, filling in on occasion during the 1925-26 season as Strephon in Iolanthe and Pish-Tush in The Mikado. A year later, in July 1926, he assumed the role of Antonio in The Gondoliers, but only for five months. Russell gave up Antonio in December 1926 and left the Company in April 1927.

His only appearance in a London program was as a chorister in Trial by Jury at the Courtice Pounds Tribute Fund Matinee (His Majesty's, December 12, 1927).
