THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Violet Russell (1883-84)

Violet Russell's two roles with the D'Oyly Carte organization were the small parts of Celia with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's No. 1 "Iolanthe" Company (August 1883), and the Lady Saphir with Carte's "B" ("Patience" No. 2) Company (December 1883-June 1884).

She had earlier created the small part of Maria in the original London production of Bucalossi's comic opera Les Manteaux Noirs (Avenue Theatre, June-December, 1882). Miss Russell later appeared in London in single matinee performances of Only a Model, A Modern Judas (both Vaudeville, February 1892), and The Melancholy Tragedy of Dido and Aeneas (Strand, October 1893).
