THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Frederick Sinden as Mr. Box in Cox and Box

Frederick Sinden (1950-60)

[Born Hartlepool 12 Jul 1928, died 4 Oct 2010]

Tenor Frederick Sinden joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus in March 1950, and served for nearly ten years, assuming several small named parts along the way. He was First Yeoman in The Yeomen of the Guard from August 1950 until May 1951, moving up to Leonard Meryll in July 1951. He assumed Mr. Box in Cox and Box from Leonard Osborn during the 1951-52 season, and played Francesco in The Gondoliers on a regular basis in 1955-56 (shared with John Fryatt) and on his own from July 1957 onward.

Sinden also understudied several larger tenor parts, filling in on occasion as the Defendant in Trial by Jury, Earl Tolloller in Iolanthe, Richard Dauntless in Ruddigore, Colonel Fairfax in Yeomen, and Marco in The Gondoliers. He left the D'Oyly Carte in January 1960 to take a position in sales and marketing with Decca Records.

Frederick Sinden was married to D'Oyly Carte mezzo-soprano Beryl Dixon. During his tenure with the Company, he and Neville Griffiths produced a series of photo postcards ( "G & S Photos") of D'Oyly Carte principals in costume.
