Margaret Smith (1957-60)

Soprano Margaret Smith appeared with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company from October 1957 to April 1960. Initially a chorister, she took her first named part as Patience in Patience during the 1958-59 season, filling in on occasion for Jean Barrington.

Between October 1959 and April 1960 she appeared regularly as Celia in Iolanthe and Zorah in Ruddigore. She also deputized on occasion in 1959-60 as the Lady Ella in Patience and Elsie Maynard in The Yeomen of the Guard, and played Gianetta in The Gondoliers regularly from February onward.

She was married for a time to D'Oyly Carte baritone Michael Wakeham, and was the niece of D'Oyly Carte soprano Phyllis Smith.
