THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Emily Squire

Emily Squire (1890)

[Born Ross-on-Wye, Hereford 2 May 1867, died Bournemouth 1948]

Emily Jane Squire was one fifteen ladies to appear as Gianetta during the first run of The Gondoliers at the Savoy. She appeared for less than two weeks--from June 19 to 30, 1890. It was her lone engagement with the D'Oyly Carte organization, her first appearance on stage, and also, it seems, her last.

She had studied at the Royal College of Music for three years and, later, at the Royal Academy. She was a well-known soloist in oratorio, having made her first appearance at the Handel Festival in 1888. Miss Squire would go on to sing for many years at a variety of concerts and musical festivals.
