THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Roy Stainton as Nanki-Poo in The Mikado

Roy Stainton (1885-86, 1887)

Roy Stainton was engaged by Richard D'Oyly Carte and John Stetson to play Nanki-Poo in New York and New England with Carte's Third American Mikado Company (November 1885-May 1886).

After appearing briefly on tour with Stetson as the Duke of Dunstable in a non-D'Oyly Carte production of Patience (February 1887), Stainton resumed touring under the D'Oyly Carte banner, and from February to May 1887, appeared in the Northeastern United States first as Prince Hilarion in Princess Ida, then as Richard Dauntless with Carte's Third American Ruddygore Company, also managed by Stetson.

Stainton's only subsequent role in New York was Neil in the comic opera Ardriell (Union Square Theatre, June 1889).
