THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Walter Van Noorden

Walter Van Noorden (m.d., 1892-99)

[Born London c.1865, died Halifax, Yorkshire 14 Apr 1916]

Walter Van Noorden, the son of a music teacher, was educated at the Guildhall School of Music. He served as musical director with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "B" (later Company "C") from July 1892 to July 1897, the new Company "B" from July 1897 to June 1898, and Company "D" from December 1898 to September 1899.

In 1899 he left the D'Oyly Carte and joined the Carl Rosa Opera Company as a conductor, then a year later took over as its managing director. Van Noorden's sudden death in 1916 was a severe blow to the Rosa Company, however. His brother, Alfred Van Noorden, was forced to put the Company into financial liquidation in 1920.
