THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

William White (1879-83)

[Born c. 1856]

William White arrived in New York on November 11, 1879, along with the principal members of D'Oyly Carte's First American H.M.S. Pinafore and Pirates of Penzance Company, which opened at the Fifth Avenue Theatre on December 1. White took small parts in several of D'Oyly Carte's later New York productions between 1881 and 1883, appearing at the Standard Theatre as Mr. Bunthorne's Solicitor in Patience (September 1881-March 1882), Manuel in Les Manteaux Noirs (September-October 1882), the Goblin Dwarf in Rip Van Winkle (October-November 1882), and the Lord Chancellor's Trainbearer in Iolanthe (November 1882-February 1883).

He also appeared as the Solicitor in a Carte-sanctioned revival of Patience at the same theatre in March-April 1883. Later New York roles came in Balfe's Satanella (Standard, May 1883), Stephens & Solomon's Billee Taylor (as Ben Barnacle, Casino, June 1885), and the farce comedy Little Puck (four theatres at various times in 1888, 1889, and 1890).
