THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

(Mr.) Hollingsworth (1875)

[Born Wokingham 20 Apr 1841]

A Mr. Hollingsworth, whose real name was Charles Hollingsworth Hewett, first appeared under D'Oyly Carte management in 1874 as the Footman in the farce The Pretty Horsebreaker and Prince Isidore in the comic opera The Broken Branch at the Opera Comique.

He created the part of Counsel for the Plaintiff for the first few months of the original production of Trial by Jury at London's Royalty Theatre beginning March 25, 1875. He left the cast in May, and reportedly traveled to Milan where he trained at La Scala. Little is known of a subsequent musical career, although correspondence in the hands of his descendants suggests he sang at the Crystal Palce under August Manns. He was a first cousin of Richard D'Oyly Carte. Their shared ancestor was their grandmother Sarah Bartlett.

Hollingsworth was uncle to two later D'Oyly Carte artists, Tessa and Jeoffry Snelson.
