No. 5 - Song - Lady Virginia and Chorus

MIDI File

Lady Virginia: I am favourably known
As a high-class chaperone,
For my services there's quite a competition;
And I frequently escort —
To bombard the social fort —
Charming débutantes of beauty and position.
They're an "Open Sesame"
And a never failing key
To the houses where I look with aspiration,
When I often find it hard
To obtain a single card
On the merits of my social reputation.
Do you see my object?
Chorus: Rather!
Lady Virginia: Tho' Society may quiz,
If you don't call that good bus'ness
I should like to know what is!
Chorus:] Do you see her object?
Rather! Tho' Society may quiz,
If you don't call that good bus'ness
I should like to know what is!

Lady Virginia: When a gentleman I see
Who I think will do for me,
Then I never let my charges spoil my chances;
And you'll very often find
That I leave the girls behind
At particularly nice At-homes and dances.
And I'm much inclined to flirt
In a manner most expert
With the boys whom ev'ry chaperone is sweet on.
If they happen to be rich,
I secure them early, which
As a rule is shortly after leaving Eton.
Do you think that's dodgy?
Chorus: Rather!
Lady Virginia: When I see a likely man,
If Virginia cannot catch him
I should like to know who can!
Chorus: Do you think that's dodgy?
Rather! When she sees a likely man,
If Virginia cannot catch him
I should like to know who can!

Lady Virginia: Though for reasons of my own
I prefer to chaperone
Any girl who's not supposed to be an heiress;
Being greatly in request,
I will always do my best
For a genuine American millionairess;
For I know these Yankee girls,
So I give them dukes and earls
Who are penniless and broken-down and done for.
But the coronets which show
Where the gilt's come off, you know,
Well, they're not the sort of coronets I run for!
Do you guess my meaning?
Chorus: Rather!
Lady Virginia: When my efforts end in fizz,
If you don't call that annoying,
I should like to know what is!
Chorus: Do you guess her meaning?
Rather! When her efforts end in fizz,
If you don't call that annoying,
I should like to know what is!
