No. 13 - Act II Opening Chorus

MIDI File

Chorus: Here on sunlit sands daintily we figure,
Sooth'd by German bands, lullaby'd by ****.
Till by "Daisy Bell" nearly driven crazy,
Back to their hotel stroll the loungers lazy.
Men: Here, by ocean blue, pretty girls in plenty
Make the life a true dolce far niente!
All: Freshest of ozone, loveliest of faces,
Crowning this alone Paradise of places.
Contraltos: Don't we look extremely fetching
Subjects fit for artist's sketching?
These are fashion's last successes,
Latest thing in bathing dresses!
Sopranos: We who don't go in for bathing
Criticise in manner scathing;
Frankly owning we can't bear them,
We should be ashamed, ashamed to wear them.
Men: Bathing dress needs careful buying,
Many figures find it trying;
Is it proved by fashion's daughter
Paint and powder stand the water?
Basses: Paint and powder
Tenors: Paint and powder
Both: stand the water?
Ensemble: Don't we look extremely fetching
Subjects fit for artist's sketching?
These are fashions last successes,
Latest thing in bathing dresses!
All: Here, while summer's hand
Sea and shore is gilding,
Castles in the sand
Boys and girls are building.
Here the faithless nurse,
Sandy babes deserting,
Leaving bad for worse
Takes to violent flirting.
Men: Morning, noon and night,
Life is full of pleasure;
Moments whose delight
Memory will treasure!
All: Here, beside the sea,
Ever blue and breezy,
Man and maid agree
All must take it easy.
