No. 12 - Song - Mrs. Bang and Chorus

MIDI File

Mrs. Bang: You talk about detectives in a story,
That guess whatever people say or do;
I think that Sherlock Holmes in all his glory
Might ask the humble laundress for a clue!
If any crime is hard to disentangle,
You put the washer-woman in the box,
For when she's put a party through the mangle,
She knows him from his dickey to his socks!
Oh, I found things out when I did a bit of washing.
A man may say he's wealthy but I know that's bosh!
I can tell he's got no dollars
By the edges of his collars,
For it all comes out in the wash, wash, wash!
Chorus: Oh, you find things out when you do a bit of washing.
A man may say he's wealthy but I know that's bosh!
I can tell he's got no dollars
By the edges of his collars,
For it all comes out in the wash, wash, wash!

Mrs. Bang: I've known a man that thought himself so clever
In keeping little matters from his wife;
He never had a letter sent him, never!
And wouldn't send a wire to save his life.
He always had the best excuses made up,
Supposing he did not come home to tea!
He'd called to see a fellow who was laid up--
That story wasn't good enough for me!
For you find things out when you do a bit of washing.
He said his friend had got the 'flu, but that's all bosh!
For I saw his cuffs were spotty,
"Café Royal — supper — Lottie!"
So it all came out in the wash, wash, wash!
Chorus: Oh, you find things out when you do a bit of washing.
He said his friend had got the 'flu, but that's all bosh!
For I saw his cuffs were spotty,
"Café Royal — supper — Lottie!"
So it all came out in the wash, wash, wash!

Mrs. Bang: I came into a bit of money one day,
And took a set of mansions near a square;
I bought a special frock for best and Sunday,
In colours warranted to wash and wear!
It had magenta sprigs to match my bonnet,
And orange daisies on a ground of green;
The servant went and spilt the soup upon it,
And so I had to try and get it clean!
But I found it out when I did a bit of washing.
They said the colour wouldn't run, but that's all bosh!
When I got it rinsed and shaken
It was just like streaky bacon,
For the dye came out in the wash, wash, wash!
Chorus: Oh, you find things out when you do a bit of washing.
They said the colour wouldn't run, but that's all bosh!
When I got it rinsed and shaken
It was just like streaky bacon,
For the dye came out in the wash, wash, wash!
